In 2004, bud break occurred early and the trend carried forward throughout the growing season. Heat spikes occurred in June and at scattered intervals throughout the summer season. Sugars developed earlier than normal and temperatures were steady into one of the earliest harvests we have had. The quality of the grape was excellent, producing small and intense fruit.
Merlot grapes were the first to be harvested in mid-September. Cabernet Sauvignon followed about a month later. The grapes were handpicked and hand sorted during the crush. Fermentation occurred during a 31-day period. The wine was aged for 20 months in French Oak, 45% new and 55% once used, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
In 2001, Terra Valentine began the 2nd phase of our development: the renovation of the historic Yverdon Vineyard. With the help of our vineyard management team and renowned consultants, we selected specific clones ideal to our soil types and elevation. We planted 8 acres of cabernet sauvignon, clone 4, and one acre of merlot, clone 181, at an elevation of 2000 feet located only yards away from Villa Valentine. 2004 is our first harvest from this vineyard.
Opens with sweet black currant, spicy cedar, toasted marshmallow and caramel. On the palate you'll find spicy, lush fruit with a hint of fresh ground espresso. Round, cocoa tannins finish off this rich, elegant wine.
