2011 Russian River, Pinot Noir
The 2011 growing season was simply different from other years past, with a light crop load and a cool growing season that preserved the grapes natural acidity and fresh fruit flavors. A cool and wet spring delayed the growing season and summer temperatures rarely rose above 90° F. By the beginning of September, the season was lagging weeks behind the norm. But sun and 90-plus temperatures finally arrived mid-month, jumpstarting harvest for early ripening.
Terra Valentine has been sourcing Pinot Noir from the same vineyard in Freestone since 2004. The vineyard has a long cool growing season allowing good flavor development while retaining natural acidity. We source two distinct Pinot Noir clones from this vineyard. Clone 115 produces wine of intense color, richness and structure while the Pommard clone which has a propensity towards creating intense, complex, dark fruited wines with good acidity.
The wine opens with bright red currant and cranberry notes rounded out by darker cherry, clove and orange spice. On the palate, the soft and mellow tannins are balanced with bright acidity and toasty rich finish.
